Principal's Letter

September 2, 1010

Dear Parents,

It is with great perseverance and determination that the administration, office staff, technology experts and classroom teachers will work this year to keep you informed of academic, social and sports events, fundraisers and general happenings in the school and parish.  Your responsibility is to merely read your email every Monday and refer to the Cosgriff web page (www.cosgriff.org) every Thursday for the Principal’s letter.

Please read the following:

  • Immediate Notice: The playground is reserved for Extended day after school (3:15-6:00) Monday-Friday. All other students are expected to leave the school grounds promptly. Students will be escorted to Extended day if a parent has not arrived for pick-up by 3:25 pm.
  • Please welcome Jen Atkins as our new part time Development Director.  Mrs. Atkins has a two-year-old at Cosgriff and is highly skilled in fundraising and development.

We also welcome Mark Jackson to our Power Hour Team.  Mark has a degree in English and has been a parishioner at St. Ambrose for many years.

  • A considerable part of last week’s Principal Letter was devoted to information regarding Kim Evans, preschool teacher from 2008-2010.  New parents to the school have inquired as to the identity and circumstances regarding Kim.  She taught 3, 4, and 5 year-old preschool children.  She came to Cosgriff at the age of 24 and previously worked at Head Start.  Kim died suddenly and tragically on June 26 after falling during a hike up Bells Canyon.  Her enduring nature and caring ways were valued by students, parents and the entire faculty and staff of Cosgriff.  A formal celebration and remembrance of Kim Evans will take place on September 24.  Just a reminder to turn in donations and scrapbooking materials to the office by September 14.  That evening at 6:30pm in the library volunteers are needed to create and assemble scrapbooks for the Evans family.
  • The Christian Values students will learn in September are:
    1. Acceptance-It simply refers to a state of mind that allows you to know the difference between the things you can help improve or change and things that cannot be changed (The Serenity Prayer).
      2.   Understanding-Understanding is using your mind to think clearly, paying careful attention to see the meaning of things.

The Social Skills students will learn and practice are:

  • Working Together
  • Engaging in Conversation

Click here to view an information guide.

  • The new Student Leadership Council members for 2010-2011 are:

Connor Morgan, President
Joey Walz, Vice President
Ian Gorrell Brown, Public Relations
Charlie Dean, Treasurer
Sarah Frederick, Secretary
Miranda Rougelot, Public Relations
Congratulations to the new Council!

  • The Community Service projects for September are:
  • The Sharing Place

The Sharing Place needs, simple children’s games, arts and crafts supplies, and cleaning products.

  • The Family Support Center

The Family Support Center needs baby formula, newborn thru 12 year-old clothes, toys and simple books.
Please put all donated items in front of the office; cash donations can be brought to the office.

  • Family fun and vacation time is very necessary throughout the year.  Please try to schedule vacations that coincide with the school calendar.  Teachers are actively teaching new concepts everyday, including Friday. A child misses lesson modeling by the teacher, interactive practice for understanding when he/she is not at school.  Completing make-up worksheets does not replace teacher instruction.  It is not always possible, but try your best to get your child to school on time everyday.  Thank you.
  • Homework Club will begin September 7.  Homework Club will be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:25-4:20pm.  Fourth thru eighth grade students are invited to attend one or all three days after school.  After Homework Club, the teacher in charge will escort all students to the St. Ambrose parking lot, and onto Extended Day if required.  Please be prompt for pick-up and use the parking lot-not the front of the school.  Students are invited to Homework Club to:
  • Complete homework assignments
  • Ask for assistance or clarification with an assignment, study guide, notes, etc.
  • Read quietly for an hour and then go home or to Extended Day.
  • Work quietly with another student(s) on a group project.

Attending Homework Club is a privilege and should not be abused by using the time for social activity not related to core curriculum study.  Miss Hepworth, Mrs. Newman and Miss Jensen will conduct Homework Club for the 2010-2011 school year.  Other teachers are almost always available after school to answer questions.

  • FYI-Faculty Representatives for 2010-2011

H.S.A. – Holly Dean
Parish Council – Kay Bush
School Board – Jim Larson, Vice Principal

  • Please remember NO SCHOOL Monday, September 6.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs. Hunt
Principal
