Principal's Letter

March 4, 2010

Dear Parents,

Perhaps it was a coincidence that sixteen out of twenty-three 7th and 8th grade students who entered the Diocesan Science Fair competition on February 27th won an award and/or received special recognition.  Could it be just luck that for the third year in a row a Cosgriff student won the overall young scientist award?  Sydney Austin was the recipient of the award this year.  It is not a coincidence or luck; in fact, it is the combination of an extremely knowledgeable, dedicated and inspiring math and science teacher, Jim Larson, who provides a very challenging and rigorous course of study each day for his students.  This coupled with several ambitious, hard working and very capable middle school students made for a perfect winning combination at the Science Fair.  Congratulations to Mr. Larson and all the students who entered the competition.

Please take time to read the names and awards of the many well deserving winners.  Click here for a list of winners.

Please read the following:

  • Click here for the fridge calendar for March, April, and May 2010.  A hard copy will be sent home with your child.
  • The third grade will host the 11:00am Mass this Sunday, March 7.  Please attend the Mass and social afterwards.
  • Thank you to the 3rd grade parents for the delicious lunch on February 19.
  • The 3rd quarter ends March 10.  Report cards will go home March 17.  Please sign and return report cards by March 19.  Honor certificates will be given to students in the classroom.
  • Students may wear uniform shorts to school starting March 11.  Shorts must be no shorter than 2” above the knee.  Proper school shoes and socks are required.
  • All parents of students in PreK-8th are invited to Math/Science Night Thursday, March 11 from 6:30-7:30pm (a little longer for middle school).  Parents are encouraged to visit your child’s class, participate in the learning activities, then venture to other classrooms to learn and observe other curriculums.
  • Thank you to Lori Zuti and Brett Allen for organizing and hosting the Jump Rope for Heart-athon this past week.  Students jumped and jumped for a healthier heart.  Students have been asked to donate $2.00 to the American Heart Association.  Donations will be accepted until March 12.  The class who purchases the most $2.00 paper hearts will win ice cream party-compliments of H.S.A.
  • The Catholic virtue students will discuss during the month of March and during Lent is FORGIVENESS.  Students will be encouraged to let bad feelings for another go, stop suffering and turn this pain into strength, which will bring about a sense of peace.  Please talk about and set the example of FORGIVENESS in your home.
  • The social skill we will continue to practice and perfect at school is MAKING AN APOLOGY.  Ask your child the steps to making an apology.  This skill is tied closely with forgiveness.  Click here to view the skill and steps.
  • SCRIP sales are low.  Purchase your groceries and gas through SCRIP and you will help with the fundraising goal of $20,000.  The SCRIP gift card winners for February were Ally Dugan, Siena DiSera and Jack Cheeseman.  Thank you to the families who purchase SCRIP through the school on a consistent basis.
  • Students in Preschool-8th grade have been practicing “Greetings,” looking at an adult or fellow student, acknowledging that person with a friendly “hello” followed by the person’s name.  Students are also encouraged to shake hands and greet a person with a proper salutation.  Please encourage and promote this important social skill with your child, as it promotes respect and courtesy.
  • Mark your calendar for Cosgriff Super Summer School for students in Preschool -8th grade.  Summer School will be held June 1st-24th, Monday through Thursday from 9:00am – 12:00pm.  Extended Day will be offered for students entering kindergarten through 8th grade from 12:00-4:00pm.  Watch for Summer School specifics and applications in the coming weeks.
  • Congratulations to all the boys and girls PARA basketball teams and coaches for a very successful and hopefully enjoyable season.  A special thank you to Jim McMinimee and Tom Hicks and all the parents who served as coaches.
